The importance of photovoltaics as a sustainable way of generating energy has increased in recent years. Photovoltaic modules and their possible applications are constantly evolving. They need to be reliable and stable for decades – and we are actively working on this.

Research and innovation

As a member of ACR (Austrian Cooperative Research), OFI contributes its expertise to applied research projects. Together with SMEs and other research partners, characterization processes are further developed and specific application issues are investigated. OFI is currently conducting research on the following topics:

  • Mobile spectrometer: Non-destructive identification of polymer encapsulation materials and multilayer backsheets of PV modules in the field
  • Repair coatings: Development and reliability testing of repair solutions for PV modules with age-related material damage (backsheet cracks)
  • Advanced degradation modeling of PV modules and materials: estimation of lifetime based on extrapolation of measurement and characterization data from accelerated aging tests and modeling
  • Coatings and coloring: Detection of changes in the appearance of building-integrated PV modules due to coating or printing on the front glass panes by means of adhesion and reliability tests
