Safety through hygienic surfaces and disinfection

The use of anti-microbial surfaces and products in healthcare facilities guarantees a high level of patient safety. We carry out tests on material compatibility with disinfectants and on the anti-microbial effectiveness of surfaces and products and advise and accompany our customers in the correct use of biocides. With the help of our expertise, safety and health protection for patients and users are guaranteed.


Development and testing of anti-microbial surfaces and products

We offer contract research, research within the framework of funded national and international projects as well as routine analysis. We advise you on the selection of approved biocides and assist you with the approval of your anti-microbial products.


Our services

  • Assistance in the selection of antimicrobially active substances and assistance in the approval of equipped surfaces (ECHA database, contact ministries, etc.)
  • Testing antimicrobial surfaces for biocidal (bactericidal, fungicidal and sporicidal) efficacy (e.g. ÖNORM EN ISO 846, ÖNORM EN ISO 20743, JIS Z 2801, ÖNORM EN ISO 22196, ASTM)
  • Verification of the effectiveness of disinfectants and their interaction with wipes (4 field test, microbiological tests, TOC, HPLC, EN 16615 and ASTM)


Cleaning and Disinfection - Resistance and Safety of Materials and Products

In many areas of the manufacturing industry (e.g. pharmaceuticals, medical devices, etc.), but also in health care facilities, very expensive devices with a variety of different materials (such as plastics, metals, textiles and coated surfaces) are used. In order to meet the hygienic requirements, these often have to be cleaned and disinfected. In addition to the general criteria of material compatibility, however, tests must also be carried out to determine the microbial basic load, cleaning effect and residue analysis.

  • Determination of chemical resistance, especially to cleaning agents and disinfectants for surface disinfection, under accelerated aging for plastics, textiles and metals (e.g. ÖNORM EN ISO 2812-3)
  • Investigation of the cleaning effect: with and without impurities (TOC, microbiological methods)
  • Residue analysis and cleaning validation (GC-FID/MS, HPLC-UV/VIS-MS, TOC, microbiological methods, W 319, endotoxins)
  • Interaction detergent with textiles (4-field test)


Research on biocidal efficacy and material compatibility

OFI develops new antimicrobial and biocidal materials and products together with its customers. A particular focus here is on the toxicological evaluation and efficacy of materials and products equipped with biocides.

  • As part of the FFG project Bikopla (2013-2017), environmentally friendly, resource-conserving techniques for the (subsequent) finishing of germ-repellent or germ-killing surfaces on plastics are being developed together with the FH OÖ of Applied Sciences. The toxicity and antimicrobial effectiveness of the surfaces will be investigated.

  • Within the framework of the FFG project HygO (2013-2016), innovative hygiene concepts for the compatibility of materials with disinfectants (efficacy, ageing, residues, etc.) are developed together with industrial partners. Different materials such as plastics, metals, textiles and antimicrobial surfaces will be tested for resistance to chemicals and disinfectants.

  • Within the framework of the FFG project SaferTex (2019-2020), cleaning agents and disinfectants are examined together with textiles for interactions and mechanisms of action.

  • Within the FFG project E.Lyse (2017-2019) antimicrobial surfaces are developed together with industrial partners using physical and electrochemical mechanisms of action. This research project will contribute to reducing biocide resistance and generating completely new concepts for hygienic surfaces.
